Whether you're replacing an old, shabby bathroom flooring tile or installing a new one, ceramic or stone tile will outlast and outperform any other type of bathroom flooring tile in terms of durability and performance.  Installed correctly, it is virtually a maintenance-free floor tile that requires little to no additional attention or care.  Also available are a wide range of materials in various colors and textures to suit your needs and preferences.

Additionally, you can lay a first-class tile floor yourself in a weekend, saving you the $500 to $1,500 it would cost to hire a professional, as well as the time and money it would take to hire a professional.  The task of laying tile should be manageable if you're familiar with basic hand tools and have the patience to carefully align each tile in the layout.

Calculating the cost of a tile installation project is a complicated process.

Begin by calculating the square footage of the floor, which will be the most expensive component of the project due to its high cost.  Then, to account for waste reduction, add 10% to the total.  If you use a more complex layout than the simple grid pattern that we used, it is likely that your waste will be greater.

However, you can find kitchen tiles china for as little as $3 or as much as $50 per square foot, with the majority of it falling between $5 and $15 a square foot.  Adding a backer board to your tile installation will increase the cost of the foshan tiles by $2 per square foot.  Other materials, regardless of the size of the bathroom, will cost approximately $90.  The tile tools you'll need (which will include a tile cutter) will cost you between $60 and $80 in total, depending on your budget.

Examine the condition of your flooring

The presence of a solid foundation — a floor that flexes only slightly when you walk across it — is critical to the success of any tiles wholesale job.  As long as your subfloor is made of concrete, this will not be an issue for you.  It is possible to lay tile directly on top of vinyl flooring, provided that the vinyl is properly adhered to the subfloor.

If at all possible, avoid tearing up the vinyl floor coverings in your home.  Without a doubt, leaving it in place saves time, but it also reduces the possibility of asbestos exposure.  A substance known as asbestos was used in the production of sheet vinyl and vinyl tile up until about the mid-1980s.  By not causing any damage to the vinyl, you eliminate the possibility of asbestos fibers being released into the air.

A backer board over vinyl flooring, depending on whether you have a wood subfloor or vinyl flooring, may be required to make the floor thicker and more rigid in order to support tile.  Taking a floor register out of the way is the quickest and most accurate way to determine the thickness of flooring.  If all else fails, look for plumbing passageways that run through the floor.  They may be hidden beneath the carpet.  As a last resort, use a spade bit with a diameter of one inch or greater to drill a hole through the floor (the hole will be covered by your new floor later).

While drilling, spraying the drill bit with a spray bottle will help to keep asbestos dust from becoming airborne and entering the air.  It is necessary to determine both the thickness of the floor and the spacing between joists in addition to the thickness of the floor.  If there is an unfinished basement or crawlspace beneath the floor, all that needs to be done is measure the distance between the beams to determine the height of the ceiling.  If there is a ceiling, a drill bit can be used to check for joists in the supporting structure.

In accordance with the 16-inch spacing between joists, the layers of structural flooring beneath the vinyl should be at least 1-1/8-inch in thickness.  To support joists every 24 inches, you'll need joists that are 1-1/2 inches in thickness.  Because tile cannot be accommodated properly on a thin flooring surface, an additional layer of tile backer board must be applied to make room for the tile.  For our floor, we needed a 1/4-inch-thick backer board to support it.  In order to achieve the bare minimum thickness on yours, it's possible that you'll need 1/2-inch backer.

It is possible to skip the backer installation (Photos 5–8) and simply prepare the vinyl floor (Photos 1–4) rather than installing it if your floor is already sufficiently thick.  Afterwards, tile directly on top of the vinyl, following the same steps that we used previously to tiles for outdoor over the backer board.

If you have vinyl flooring installed on a subfloor of any type, there are two situations in which it cannot be left permanently in place.

First and foremost, if there are large sections of vinyl that are loose, do not cover them with tile or backing material. (Photo 4 depicts a small loose spot that is tolerable and manageable in this situation. )

Second, sheet vinyl that has been cushioned must be removed prior to the installation of the tile.  Foam-backed vinyl flooring is significantly thicker and softer than standard vinyl flooring, which is why it is known as cushioned vinyl flooring.  Tile or backer board will not stay in place properly because the surface is too spongy.  Contact your local health department for information on how to check for asbestos and the proper procedures to follow if asbestos is discovered before removing the material from the building.

Take the Time to Consult with OthersWhile you're out shopping, consider the following:

Even though home centers carry everything you need for this project, it's best to begin your shopping at a tile store because you're more likely to receive expert advice on how to lay tile there.

Sketch your floor plan as quickly as possible and make note of all of the important measurements. . . . Additionally, take a photograph of the floor near the doorwayAs a result of your input, the tile store staff will be better equipped to recommend a transition that will neatly join the tiled floor to the hallway flooring in the future.  Transitions are available in a number of different styles to accommodate any situation or requirement.

When choosing the tile, make sure to ask if any special installation procedures are required before proceeding.  Before grouting some tiles, it is necessary to coat them with grout release to prevent them from sticking together.  In addition, inquire about the methods and procedures used in tile cutting.  You'll be using sanded grout to lay the  on the floor.  To seal the joints between the floor and tub, as well as the joints between the floor and wall tile, check to see if sanded caulk is available in a color that matches your grout color.

When learning how to install tile, keep in mind that cement products such as thin-set and grout absorb moisture from the skin and can even cause burns that require medical attention.  Despite the fact that most professionals work with their hands bare, if you have any special sensitivity, you should consider wearing gloves while doing your work.  It is also recommended that you wear eye protection while mixing the thin-set and grout.
