Meal Plan for a Picnic at Katara Beach

Planning a picnic at Katara Beach? Here are easy food ideas for the beach, plus nearby restaurants for burgers, pizza, Levantine food, pastries and a relaxed dinner.

A day at Katara Beach doesn't need a complicated food plan. If you're going with family or friends, I'd keep the food simple enough to eat without a proper table, avoid anything that becomes messy in the heat, and save the bigger meal for later.

The good thing about Katara is that you don't have to pack everything from home. Once you're done swimming or walking around the Cultural Village, there are plenty of places nearby for a proper meal.

Pack Something Easy for the Beach

For the actual picnic, I'd go for food that people can pick up and eat without much fuss.

Sandwiches, wraps, burgers, pizza, chicken pieces and simple sides all work better than dishes that need plates and cutlery. If children are coming, it's also worth having a couple of familiar options rather than making the entire picnic dependent on one type of food.

I'd also bring plenty of water. Drinks tend to disappear quickly when you're spending a few hours outside, particularly if the group is swimming.

U Burger Works Well for a Casual Beach Meal

If you don't want to prepare the food yourself, U Burger - Katara is one of the more convenient options to consider.

The restaurant is in South Plaza at Katara and has the kind of menu that suits a casual outing: burgers, chicken, fries, shareable sides and drinks.

For a group, I'd order a few different burgers and put some sides in the middle rather than buying exactly the same meal for everyone. The Baby Burgers can also be useful if younger children are coming along.

Sides such as Chicken Flakes, Beef Popcorn and Cheesy Onion Rings are the sort of things people can share while sitting around and talking.

It's also a better fit for the beach than somewhere that expects you to sit down for a long meal. You can eat, get back to the beach and carry on with the day.

Pizza Is Another Easy Option for Sharing

Pizza is probably the simplest choice if several people want to eat together but don't necessarily want the same thing.

You can order two or three different flavours, put the boxes down and let everyone take what they want. There's no need to prepare individual plates, and it is much easier to accommodate different tastes in one order.

If you're considering ordering pizza in Katara, check delivery availability for your exact location before placing the order. Beach delivery can work differently from delivery to a residential address, so pickup may sometimes be the easier option.

For a group, I'd keep the order fairly straightforward: one classic pizza such as Margherita or Pepperoni, one chicken or meat option, and a couple of sides. If someone doesn't want pizza, you can also add pasta, Melts or other items from the wider menu.

Save the Proper Dinner for Bayt El Talleh

After several hours outside, this is when I'd switch from picnic food to a proper meal.

Bayt El Talleh Restaurant in the Katara Hills is a good choice if you're eating with family or a group and want something more substantial. The Levantine menu includes mezze, salads, pastries, grilled meats, shish tawook and kebabs.

I'd order this kind of food for the table rather than giving everyone an individual main course. A few mezze, some hot starters and several grilled dishes give everyone the opportunity to try different things.

The setting is also part of the reason to choose it. You're still in Katara, so dinner feels like part of the outing rather than having to get back in the car and find another restaurant elsewhere in Doha.

La Maison Ani for Something Lighter

If your group isn't in the mood for a big grilled dinner, La Maison Ani Doha is another option within Katara Cultural Village.

It's a better fit if you're looking for a more relaxed café-style meal with a mixture of savoury dishes, pastries and desserts.

I'd probably choose this one for a late lunch or an early dinner, especially if some people are more interested in coffee and dessert after the beach than a large meal.

Don't Make the Picnic Too Complicated

The easiest mistake is bringing too much food.

You don't need breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner and three different desserts just because you're spending the whole day at Katara. A few easy-to-eat items, drinks and perhaps something sweet are usually enough for the beach.

Then, once everyone has had enough of the sun and swimming, you can decide whether to sit down for a proper dinner.

If you're with children, I'd also avoid ordering everything at once. Their appetites can change quickly after a few hours outside, and you may find that what looked like a huge lunch suddenly isn't enough—or that half of it goes untouched.

How I'd Plan the Day

If I were organising a Katara Beach day, I'd keep the first meal casual. I'd either bring sandwiches and snacks from home or pick up something like burgers or pizza nearby.

After the beach, I'd walk around Katara for a while before settling down for dinner. If everyone wanted something substantial, Bayt El Talleh would be my choice for a shared meal. If the group wanted something lighter, I'd look at La Maison Ani instead.

That way, the food doesn't take over the day.

The whole point of a picnic at Katara Beach is to spend time outside, swim, walk around the Cultural Village and enjoy being together. Good food should make the day easier, not give you another itinerary to manage.
