SUMMARY OF THE NOVEL “Devil in me” BY BAKOUR KARAPETYAN

In 2010 Armenia’s Writers’ Union supported by the Armenian Government published the novel “Devil in me” by Bakur Karapetyan. In the scope of national and global problems and style the novel incorporates a significant innovation and progressive thinking in the Armenian prose writing. Starting from the expression “Devil in me” the author freely hovers over cities, villages and fields, enters the deep past, making the readeran immediate partaker of events and meetings.

The novel deals with today’s life in its multilateral manifestations. The principal character is dualized. One continues living as a prose writer, recording the events witnessed by his double, while the other one carrying a demon inside, can see the events taking place on earth: killing peaceful protestors by government troops, corruption, moral degradation, he takes part in secret governmental meetingsand committees (BK-3, MJ12) at the scale of the Universe, shows concern about the currently projected global disasters, about conflicts between nations, about problems disturbing the contemporary civilization, viz.:using photosynthesis in place of nuclear and oil energy carriers orestablishing connection with the microscopic world. The main characteris submerged into the past, meeting the East-side Armenian King Vachakan the Gracious, organizes and takes part in the 482 Aghwen Constitutional Assembly, makes the past part of the present,is commissioned by BK-3 to explore the life of Moscow, then makes an attempt to save an original vanishing civilization, the people oforok, described in the book as carriers of an original ethnic culture.

The book’s active personi are specific people living today. To achieve vivid perception, the author oftentimes reverts to grotesque, allegoric or abstract presentation, whichare however mostly prompted by the context.
