What to wear with your Engagement Ring? A Guide for You

It is likely that your sweetheart chose to pop the question at a romantic picnic or beach sunset, but it could also have been a dinner and champagne toast.

You can still have fun with promise rings for couples, even though the occasion is over. Which part of your hand should your new adornment be worn?

Western tradition dictates that an engagement ring should be worn on the fourth or ring finger of your fiancee's hand. Once your wedding has passed, how do you show off your ring's dazzling shine afterward? We will discuss engagement ring manners before, on your special day, and afterwards.

Where is your engagement ring worn compared to the wedding band? Simple, the engagement ring is worn (and later, also your wedding band) on the left fourth finger.

This tradition dates back to the ancient Romans who believed the vein in the ring-finger of the left handed ran straight into the heart. Vena Amoris translates into the Vein of Love.

Modern science has proved that this vein does not exist. However, it is still a tradition in many countries to wear boyfriend girlfriend necklaces around the fourth finger on the left hand.

 Engagement Ring Before Wedding

You should place your engagement ring on the left ring-finger of your hand. There are several ways you can display and protect your engagement ring.

Some fiancees only choose to wear the ring in public

Some fiancees wear their engagement ring every day

Some fiancees opt to wear two rings. They have a less expensive travel ring that they can wear in public and their actual engagement ring at home.

Engagement Ring On Your Wedding Day

Nearly 5,000 years ago, in Egypt, the custom of wearing and gifting a wedding ring as a sign of marriage was born. The circular shape of a ring represents:

Eternity has no beginning and end, like the love between a couple that endures forever.

The center of a ring can be viewed as a portal to everlasting love

During your wedding ceremony, you will usually exchange wedding bands with your partner. After you exchange vows, place the rings on each other’s left ring-finger.

The question is, where will you be placing your engagement ring for the ceremony?

Most brides wear their bands close to their hearts. Other words, you will wear your wedding band beneath your engagement on the ring finger.

You should remove your engagement rings completely before your ceremony. During the ceremony, some brides move their engagement ring from the left hand to the right. After the vows they can slide the engagement ring back onto the wedding ring.

The sizing of the ring can be a bit tricky for some people, since they may have a slightly larger size ring on their right hand. The engagement ring can fit both of your hands, provided that your ring sizes match within a quarter inch.

It is perfectly acceptable to wear the wedding ring above the engagement ring in the event that your ring does not fit on the other hand.

 Engagement Ring After Your Wedding

This is a personal preference, not something that's based on tradition. We recommend the following when it comes time to decide how to wear wedding rings sets:

Traditional – With the wedding ring inside and the engagement band outside

Reversed with the wedding band on outside

On opposite hands, place the rings in opposition.

Special - Only wear your wedding band on special occasions and not your engagement ring.

Stacked- A bride may choose to stack several wedding bands together to create a wedding jewelry set that is more eye-catching for the modern woman.

Soldered: Some brides decide to solder both the engagement ring as well as the wedding band into one single piece, forming a jewelry item that represents the marital bond.

When you break the "rules" of engagement rings, it allows you to choose a style that suits your preferences and lifestyle. It's not necessary to stick to conventional rules when you decide where to wear your engagement rings. Men's wedding rings are not unusual either.
